You know, over the years I've criticized Buffy a little. (I hear the laughing! >;).  I've pointed to a few character flaws.  I've said that I thought she had issues.    Heck, let's admit it, I've been hard on the girl sometimes.  That said, I considered a few things to be true (and to be essential Buffy).
  • She's always been a good and dutiful soldier.  She wouldn't gloss over/emotionally dismiss a little thing like causing an apocalypse.
  • She has a tendency to be angst-ridden.  The girl dwells.  She would be conflicted if her lovelife brought on death, mayhem and destruction.  Heck, she might even dwell upon it.
  • She cares what her friends think. To the point that she broods about it sometimes...even when she shouldn't.
  • She has a moral compass.  She can be confused sometimes, but she's pretty insistent on what's right is right and what's wrong is wrong.   She can at times even be a bit binary about it.
So how and why did Season 8 eradicate the positive qualities that even Buffy critics grant her?

To quote my favourite episode "Something Blue:"
Buffy: What's wrong with 'Buffy'?
Giles: Ah, such a good question.

S8 has taken a lot of criticisms I have had about Buffy's behavior over the years and has expounded them to a way I cannot even fathom. Good Lord, I don't even know where to begin.

The whole thing is starting to look like an oldskool yay!Spike Bangel-bashing fic, isn't it? Any moment now there'll be a Spillow hook-up...

I can't shake that comment from Joss about what Buffy fans needing and comic fans needing not being the same thing.

*This* is what comic fans need?

Wow, he must not think much of comics fans, huh.

Continuity? For wusses.

Logic? Unecessary.

Characterization? Extraneous piffle.

Artwork? Eh. Whatevs.

Great dialog? ...Why?

Exciting new concepts? Old badfic will do (but treated without irony)

Intelligence? Replace that with shout-outs to other franchises. Comic fans won't notice the difference.

Plotting? Bwhahahahaha!

So what do comics readers need? Space ships, girls with oversized boobs, talking dogs, and space pr0n! >;)

It sort of does, doesn't it? ::cringes for Joss::

Bangel are whining about their twu wuv while destroying the world, and Spike's got a space ship and is about the mission.

Wow. That's not good, is it?

Well I've said for years that comic!Spike is too good for comic!Buffy, so quite frankly I'm happy to let Angel have her.

(Not happy that they've destroyed Buffy & Angel, obviously, but...)

I know.

Bright spot. I had something planned in fanfic that I thought might be just a little hard on Buffy... and the comics flew right passed it at a million miles an hour. Makes the plot point pretty bullet proof now.

I've actually be contemplating posting a little S8 reaction fic too, but I thought I might be too poke-y/prickly about it. Now, I don't think it's so bad. XD

Oh, the fic is one that's been WIPing around since before the comics started.

Bright side -- everything I thought might be a bit too hard on Buffy or Angel has been a thousand times worse in the comics. I'm golden.

Down side -- people might think I got the ideas from the comics and my less toxic incidents might be perceived as a 'fix it'. (Hey, I thought up those bad things all on my own! >:)

Mine's been brewing since about issue #20 or so, but I've been keeping it close to the vest and protecting it. My "Acceptable Losses," which is only updated sporadically, is also sorta kick-started by the early issues of S8, and I had to step back from writing it because I thought I was getting too angry at the comics to write objectively... but now I think I was actually writing spot-on. XD

I'm having a convo on IDW's forum trying to explain why I don't see Buffy as a kind and loving fluffy bunny even before S8. I think that I am letting my irritation make me word things too strongly. The phrase "with heroes like these, who needs villains?" might be too much. XD

This is why I stay away from the forums.

It's also why I only keep track of the comics in a train wreck viewing way.

Buffy, Angel, the shows, and the characters were far from perfect, but they were no where near as terrible as the comics or the way they're portrayed in the comics. It's easier to keep that in mind when keeping comics crazy at an arms length.

I sat down this morning and I realized how much I miss the show... not S7 of BtVS or S4 of Ats... but I watched Something Blue, and I nearly cried because I miss "my show" - the humor, the poignance, the excellent dialogue, etc. These comics have nearly ruined the show for me because I try watching my fave eps to feel better, but they just wind up making me sad now.

*starts making my own comic again*

They very thouroughly assasinated her character didn't they?

Thing is even if Emmie is right and this is just some glowhypnol effect I wouldn't know how they want to use that to explain her behavior over the past years. If she knew Spike was alive and was "too busy" to say hello, she's a thoughtless horrible person. A real Bella type, exactly like one the cover.

Why should anyone bother to read about someone like that for 36 issues?

The only theory I heard so far that made sense is that Buffy lost her soul during the slayer spell and I doubt the comic is going to make that much sense unfortunately.

I'm afraid it's just Season 8 that's soulless.

Not even sure that makes sense, though. We've seen quasi-soulless Buffy before in S4 and she was all business. Soulless Buffy, while it explains everything up to Twilight and after, doesn't explain why she's still fawning all over Angel.

I think we're really going to have to chalk that one up to her emotional arrested development (at the ripe old age of 17) and 'matter of preference'.

Is it sad to say that I've always thought that she lost more of her soul than she thought when she was living with Kathy in S4 and that the "hole in her soul" has grown bigger and bigger over the years til the time where she's lost all sense of reality. I guess she thought that she could fill that hole... with undead peen.

True. Even if it were glowhypnol (a concept I'm not willing to buy until there's something in the text about it), it still skewers Buffy in a host of pretty terrible--and painfully narcissistic-- ways

As someone somewhere pointed out, we saw Buffy lose her soul in an episode in Season 4... and was still more in character than she is in the comics.

It honest to god isn't a shipping thing. Spuffies are well aquainted with the fuzzy end of the lollipop.

It's that Buffy caused an apocalypse and doesn't seem to care! Sure, Slayerettes died by the horde, whatevs. Best day ever!

But, I'm not waiting for an explanation. Thus far with everything WTF in the comics, we've been told it's just the way it is. The folks in charge are surprised it's considered OOC. So, unless they ever say otherwise, I'm going to go along thinking that this is who the comics believe Buffy to be... which... yeah.

Nothing to see here.

And the whole Angel is David Berkowitz flying Twangel is...

Image (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v80/shipperx/?action=view&current=29l20qo.gif)

Sure, Angel's plans in the past have at times had the whiff of being suicidal, and he did have that greige period in AtS Season 2. But he's never been this dumb.

The writers drank their own Kool Aid to such an extent that they just assumed that she was a heronine because they said she was/her name was on on the title that they didn't have to justify anything she did?

And that type of thinking lead to Dead Things Alley Beating dialed up to 11 on the universe?

Its not like they don't have form at that kind of double-think.

Otherwise, I got nothing.

Can I admit I'm kind of fascinated in how this turns out? No, not in a give good money for the comic kind of a way, I've never read any of the comics, more of a "What in god's name are they thinking?" sort of way.

From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
Hell yes you can admit that!

I have to admit that's my interest in it as well (I realized ages ago that if I took it seriously then I'd actually feel something about the characters. Apparently, I cannot work up even a sense of disappointment in the characters, which clearly means I'm not taking the stuff seriously. I cared about Buffy, Angel, Dawn, etc. My not feeling anything about them must mean that I'm totally outside the story. At this point, I'm just watching to see how Joss and Co try to spin this as being gold rather than dull dross. Spin away, people! Spin. Spin. Spin! :)

I still hope that there will be a twist that can salvage the character of Buffy. She's either possessed or something.

I dunno, though. Right now, the damage is huuuge.

Date: 2010-09-01 10:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
Honestly, I don't know how it can be salvaged, which isn't to say there can't be a twist. I'm sure Buffy will have a triumph or Oleander epiphany. It's supposed to be a superheroine comic (of sorts). She has to 'win the day.' There will probably be deus ex machina involved and toss in free pass somewhere. It'll all work out in the end.

But I find it hard to believe that any emotional satisfaction is anywhere in the offing. I can't even imagine what that would possibly entail at this point and without it, I don't think it's 'salvaged'...and that's assuming that the thing isn't as bad as it appears to be.
