Long Weekend
Sep. 5th, 2010 03:56 pmIf I haven't responded to a comment I'm not ignoring anyone. It's labor day weekend which means that football season has started and the entire Saturday is consumed. We headed out to Tuscaloosa early (considering the game started a 6pm, but they now close all the campus roads three hours before the game, and it's an hour drive to get there. Plus, there's the packing for the tailgating all all the other whatnot.
They just completed the stadium expansion, so now they are packing in 101,000+ people into the place. And now the concession stand at our area of seats are Dreamland ( Upside, it's Dreamland. Downside, now for the entire game you smell Dreamland... which makes you hungry... the entire game).
So I'm talking about the stadium a lot. That's because it wasn't much of a game. Next week is Penn State and that's exciting, but this week was one of those poor sacrificial lamb teams that sign up because they don't play stadiums this big and tickets make money for their program. It's the kind of game where two of our top players were on the bench the entire game and we played second and third string for the entire second half and still won 48 to 3. So, yeah, not much of a game. They did update the new intro on the now four jumbo trons in the stadium.
It's strange how this sort of thing works due greatly to our own memories. It's impossible to see that blocked kick of Tennessee's last year without a thrill because of remembering the deep funk of despair two seconds earlier with "We've lost. We've lost. There goes the hope ofbeating Tebow winning the SEC or a shot at the championship." There were seconds left on the clock, this was a chip-shot for their kicker and... it was blocked! So when I see the clip I remember sitting in the stands, sick with nerves saying "I can't look. I just can't look" followed by intense and immediate elation (and quite a bit of disbelief) that a miracle happened and Cody blocked the kick! That's where the emotion comes from. It's silly as hell, but there you go. It works for me every time (as does the over-the-head catch/flip of Protho's. It will never cease to be an astounding scary damn-near-impossible catch, but it has such poignancy because later in the same game, Protho broke his leg in what turned out to be a career ending injury, so it was his last minute of football glory, and as such always chokes me up.
On the downside of the day, somehow during tailgating something must've been left open on the car, because we killed the battery and it took an hour or two to find someone who could jump off the car. I didn't make it home last night until 1:30 AM). And sometime during all of this I re-ingured my knee (and I had just gotten it about 90% well!) Now it's back to the same condition it was in last Sunday.
At any rate, it was a nice day with the weather being absolutely gorgeous. So upside and down, not a bad day. :)

Ok, not likely. The O-line and QB are probably too green to deal with an SEC pass rush. Hopefully it'll be competitive, though.
