Lost Nostalgia
Jan. 21st, 2011 04:06 pmAs conversations go, they meander and somehow or another I found myself thinking of LOST. And, you know what? I don't really care whether or not everything in it made sense. It was a heck of a fun ride that ended on a group hug.
I'll take it.
Vid Nostalgia: (And duh! I just noticed that this first vid puts everything in chronological order!)
(I forgot that Ben was pretty bad ass. Isn't Abrams making a pilot of with the actor who was Ben and the actor who was Locke where they're both ex-Black Ops CIA agents? I want to see this show!)
Oh, and a reunion that did. not. suck.
I'll take it.

Date: 2011-01-21 10:24 pm (UTC)Oh yes, me too.
LOST wasn't perfect by any means, but it kept me entertained for six years, and gave me a finale that left me feeling emotionally satisfied. Thanks for sharing the trip down memory lane. :)

And, yes, it kept me entertained and gave the characters a loving, redemptive farewell. That does my tv watching heart good.

Date: 2011-01-22 01:50 am (UTC)What LOST could teach Whedon many times over, is how to write reunions that do. not. suck. (I don't care how many times I watch it. It still makes me cry like a little girl. I both wanted and needed this.) [and for some reason LJ won't embed it so a link:

See Joss, that is what the audience calls an emotional payoff for this:

Date: 2011-01-22 02:21 am (UTC)My favourite Japanese show is called Shoujo Kakumei Utena. When you first start watching the show, you think that it's a very straight-forward standard teen-girl-gets-powers/gifts/thrust into a somewhat magical situations, but within the first arc, you realize that the world is not straight forward. There's a whole metaphorical undercurrent to the show, lots of illusions, and sometimes it's hard to tell if what the audience is seeing is really happening or if it is metaphorically happening or if some of the characters are just delusional. It is incredible and strange, and it knew when to quit. It had four arcs, 32 episodes, and that was it. The story was over.
However, there were more stories to tell. The woman who created the story developed a comic/manga for it, a feature length film, a comic to go with the film, and a live-action musical. These were all the same basic story, but each retelling was a reimagining, different but equally good. The movie was completely off the wall, all metaphors and about the visual experience of the world the characters were in. The original manga was all about a deeper exploration of the plot. They all rocked, and I was so glad that the creator got the chance to see thoroughly explore her plot and her characters. The main series will always be my favourite, but it is crazy as hell and there are episodes in which I have no idea what's going on, but it's just wonderful.

Date: 2011-01-22 04:18 am (UTC)And his shows seem pretty good with the shipping aspects. God knows LOST was full of starcrossed lovers, but they also tried to pay all of them off, so it didn't feel cruel in the way that Joss's does. Your chosen couple may have terrible things happen, but they'll always get their moment in the sun. The starcrossed is there for the longing aspect, which I can totally embrace. They're doing a heck of a job with it in Fringe right now as well. I don't mind angst. I just don't like feeling arbitrarily tortured with ridiculous angst simply for the sake of angst... because no one is allowed to be happy -- ever.

Tell it on the mountain! I don't need everyone to be holding hands and singing and bringing about world peace, but for two minutes I'd like for just a few characters to experience some little happinesses that won't be crushed into misery two minters afterwards. I was asked today if I would watch a show in which Spike got everything he deserved, and my answer was a resounding yes, because if he got everything he deserved, there'd still be complications and new disasters and such for him to deal with and have conflict about.
