Good lord. I remember an office where the bosses didn't dare schedule meetings at noon because most of us were watching "All My Children" in the conference room.
Frankly, give it to 2013 and I doubt there will be any soaps left. OLTL has actually been doing better than both GH and Days in the ratings. So the clock is ticking...
What are they planning? Two 'reality' shows, one a cooking/food/talk show the other a weight loss/makeover talk show... because there aren't enough of those already....
Weird part of the AMC/OLTL cancellation is that right now OLTL has higher ratings than both GH and Days. So... yeah... their days are numbered too. Pretty soon the genre will be gone.
So not surprised by this. Was discussing this with my mother over the phone and we both speculated that AMC and OLTL were on the chopping block. She tried both recently and couldn't watch either. And..well, the daytime serial is a dying breed. We agreed the only reason GH is surviving is it is outside the mold, attracting people like James Franco and doing something the others aren't. But it will most likely be dead in the water in about five years if that.
DVR's, the advent of cable, the internet (especially the internet) and iphones have killed the daytime serial. College kids aren't watching it any more, and the older audience is either dying off or drifting away. My mother can now watch Justified, Grey's, Upstairs Downstairs in the daytime - as opposed to having to settle for soaps.
The really old ones disappeared a while ago...by old, I mean the ones that started in the 1940s and 50s and on radio, before I was born. GH and Y&R are actually the youngsters in the bunch.
[edited...because last sentence made no sense to anyone but me]
I wasn't actually surprised by their cancellation. It's still sad, though.
OLTL clearly had a Brian Frons interference last year when they had to fire all the gay and African American(save the one early teen) and replaced them with plastic 'teen' hot guys (who the audience loathes.
AMC has been saddled with an endless succession of ever worse headwriters.
The ironic thing is, OLTL actually had a larger audience number than General Hospital or Days of Our Lives today. That said, it's not nearly as recognizable or high profile as GH or Days. I'm honestly not at all surprised to see AMC and OLTL go. The writing has been on the wall for a while.
