Modern Family
Okay, I admit it. I still love and laugh at Modern Family. NuLily is cute and believably like the previous twins who played Lily... but this one doesn't look miserable while on TV.

Liked Mitchell worrying whether he was macho-enough for a baby boy ("I just want to be able to teach my son all the stuff my dad... taught Clare") and laughed as soon as Luke showed up to comfort Mitchel because you knew (and Luke and Mitchell knew) that he'd been sent there by Cameron to show Mitchell that he could deal with a little boy.

Revenge
You can sort of see how it was inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo with a gender-swap (though what did she do that landed her in prison? Since it was her father who was framed and she was just a kid. Whatever she did, she probably actually did it.)

Wonder about the longevity of the revenge scheme plot... because exactly how many people can she be setting up? {Although, geez, the people she's up against must be mind-boggling wealthy in order to be rich enough to auction off their Van Gogh(!) and their Manet(!) for charity(!!) Hell, even if they hadn't been responsible for labelling her father a terrorist, you would have to know these people were most likely corrupt to be that free with their OTT wealth.

What I liked: An active protagonist. She's not some endangered, doesn't-know-anything heroine, but someone who has already gotten the lay of the land, concoted a faux-identity, and is setting about to intentionally engineer the downfall of all (perceived) enemies. (and managed to tick one off her list in the pilot). Also... pretty scenery.

Anyway, it's enough to probably have me tune in a couple more times to see where they are going and how they intend to carry this out. Given the way it began and then our later introduction to Jack and Daniel, I think part of it is that her quest for revenge will also harm people who quite probably didn't deserve it, and that's a wrinkle to wrangle with. So she probably isn't as clear cut a heroine as we think when we see her as terrorized little girl(and since Amanda seemed to have feelings about having turned on the heroine's father, the arch enemy may not be 100% awful. Heroine's father loved her for some reason and Madeline Stowe is talented enough to do something with this villainess part... although any time I see her, I'll have to work against thinking of Daniel Day Lewis looking hot saying "I will find you!" from Last of the Mohicans). Plus, murder mystery. I realize we're supposed to think the heroine engineered the murder we see in the opening sequence (and maybe she did... which means she's not really a heroine, is she?) but I'm thinking it's a red herring and the murder is an unanticipated wrinkle.

Anyway, looks like a soapy (very soapy) mystery. But, hey, I can do soap, so I'm willing to give it a chance to see where it will go.

I've been LOLing at gifs made of Modern Family all night. I have a class on Wednesday nights, so I may just have to wait for the DVDs to watch it. Revenge sounds good, and you're the second person to tell me to check it out, so I may be downloading it. Have you heard anything about New Girl? I've only seen negative stuff on Tumblr, so I don't know if I want to check it out.

Humor is such a tricky thing because people have different things they find funny.

For myself, though I usually like Zooey Daschenel, I really didn't find the pilot to be funny. Maybe it will improve.

Haven't seen Revenge yet...got it taped or DVR'd. (I watched another episode of Fringe instead, starting S2 - which did surprise me.)

But your review reminds me a little of Dynasty (Joan Collins' Alexis character) meets Counte of Monte Cristo...in both the character seeking revenge is in a way a sort of anti-hero, who harms innocents - seeing them as little more then pawns. Could be a lot of fun.

I don't think I'd call her a heroine. She's more of an anti-heroine.

Was it a prison or just a juvenile detention center? She didn't look old enough for an adult prison, to me.

I enjoyed it a a lot and look forward to uncovering some of the unanswered questions.

I think it was juvenile detention as she was released when she turned 18. But she must've done something to have wound up there because just because her father was convicted of treason wouldn't have sent a 10 or 12 year old to juvenile detention.

Oh I agree and I look forward to finding out what it was. I'm assuming it was a product of rage and feelings of betrayal that her father was a famous terrorist. She probably ended up in the foster system and I can imagine she got in a lot of fights.

The heroine didn't strike me as conscienceless, but... yeah.

The intro begins with a murder then zips back 5 months (and I'm thinking that quite possibly the first 8 or 13 episodes are working our way back to that 5 month mark so that they have an ending if the show isn't picked up.) And eventually in the '5 months earlier' we meet the murder victim as well as the guy who appears to be an accomplice in the murder... Both are too young to have any direct connection with what happened to her father. So I can see where that five month mark could become a pivot point where she begins having to deal with the fact that her hands are now dirty as well.

There's also another guy involved in the revenge plot whose story we don't know, but who strikes me as this story's version of Bertuccio.
